Mr. Rogers and the EPA...RESULTS!!!

Today Mr. Rogers made a personal visit to my home to share some very good news. The EPA came out today to look at the ravine near my home. The lady with the EPA just called and told me that they did write citations...THANK GOD...but not to the county for my ravine! They wrote them to the Sabine National Forest. My ravine will be now be cleaned! There were tickets, 2 in fact, issued to Shelby county for the Roughrider and Loop 500 dump sites.

If you are here reading this it is because you have the same probelm. Let your voice be heard and you too can see results.

  1. Commissioner Rogers is to be lauded for his proactive work with this problem.
I tried to find a county map on-line that would
tell me what the boundaries of the precincts are,but have not been successful yet.
I did bumble into a county website that gives some of the duties and responsibilities of the officials: http//www.co.shelby.tx.us/ips/cms/countyoffices/countyJudge.html

This would seem to indicate that the commissioners' responsibilities and authorities are considerable, but the head lawman of the county is the county sheriff and it *is* his responsibility to enforce all the laws. Constables also have responsibility in this area.

Dont stop your efforts, Travis. Your interest and efforts are certainly appreciated, BUT you need the help and cooperation of those other elected officials whose responsbility is also clear.

Now, how can the people speak out and make sure you get that cooperation?

  2. I thought this blog was for solutions not for political "at a boy". According to the blog it it took the EPA to get involved before the trash was to be removed from 3385. Now what about the rest the county? Who is going to step up to solve the dumping in the rest of the county?

  3. The politicians have to get involved, because it is their duty and their responsibility. Those who have stepped up to the plate should be applauded, and those who havent need to get with the program.

For what we pay in taxes, we have a right to expect certain things from our local, county, state and federal government.

Sometimes we have to make our voices heard quite clearly, however, to get things off high center.

It doesnt hurt to give an "attaboy" where due, and an "Awshux" to the others.

  4. Let me say that while Mr. Rogers is a very kind person who does care about this problem and really would like to help, his hands are tied as to what he is able to do and what his office can afford to do. He can only work within the means he is given. However, he was kind enough to make a special trip to my home to share the great news that the trash would get cleaned, and for that I am thankful.....but let me be clear when I say that it was not because of any effort made or involvement on behalf of ANY political figure here in the county other than Shad Sparks that I was able to get any kind of results. That is the problem. Had I not called TCEQ myself, the trash would still be sitting there....(which it still is by the way, but they said it would be cleaned). So instead of trying to figure out who to give credit or "at a boys" to...why don't we discuss the fact that there is still a real problem here that needs to be solved, no matter how or who decides to do it.

Also, if we are going to give credit or "at a boys"....let us give it where it is due...Mrs. Kendra Riffe with TCEQ for making those responsible parties clean it up and for stopping the buck passing that was obviously going on here. At a girl! Now let us see if our local officials can follow suit and keep it clean.

Until we have a dump site in place trash will continue to be dumped. Mr. Rogers is but one man and so are our constables. It is impossible for them to monitor all of the roads in the county. Sadly, trash was dumped again near my home just last night, proof positive that what we need is for our elected officials to fix the problem at its root by giving the citizens a legal place to dump. Now which elected official needs to do this is beyond me??? Can anyone answer that question because that responsibility does not fall within the office of the road commissioners or the Sherriff’s office.

  5. The problem all boils down to we need a county landfill. Seems to me that all that is going on is a lot of finger pointing. Happens in Shelby County a lot.

  6. It is TCEQ and EPA regulations that eliminated local land fills. There are trash problems all over the county, it is the resonsibility of each citizen NOT to contribute to the problem. Each town has ordinances that are ignored by the elected officals. In the city of Tenaha trash sites have been reported and then the Mayor and 3 of the councilMEN choose not to do anything about it. The Citizens of Tenaha and the Citizens of the precinct sit back and wait for someone else to do something. Until these citizens elect officals that want to follow and ENFORCE the written ordinances and laws we will always have trash problems and other problems.

  7. I don't even know who to talk to who might actually do something about the disgusting state of trash on the county roads of Shelby County. My road is horrible now, with trash, mattresses, a TV, and numerous other items. My commissioner obviously doesn't do much---my road has not been graded since last June! Who do I contact?
